The Most Effective Sweatshirt Printing Techniques

At Camaloon, we only use printing techniques that deliver the best results. We make personalised sweatshirts using screen printing and direct-to-garment (DTG) printing. Both techniques produce a long-lasting, high-quality print. Each has its own set of advantages that make it suitable for some projects but not others.

Here’s some helpful information on both printing methods to help you make an informed decision.

What is screen printing?

Screen printing is a printing technique that transfers a design onto a sweatshirt using a mesh stencil. Ink is pushed onto fabric through a mesh with a squeegee and does not soak into it but rather lays on top.

When to choose screen printing?

Choose screen printing if:

  • You need lots of sweatshirts
  • Your design is simple and has up to four colours

Screen printing is the best option for large-scale printing. The setup for one sweatshirt is the same as for 1,000 sweatshirts, so your cost per shirt will be significantly lower if you order in bulk.

The technique is most effective with designs that have fewer than four colours. Each colour in your design requires its own mesh and equals more preparation time and resources. Small details and text are hard to reproduce.

What is direct-to-garment (DTG) printing?

Direct-to-garment printing is similar to digital printing on paper. It reproduces an image from a computer, but instead of printing on paper, a DTG printer prints on fabric. Four inks are used in the process — cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK) — and are combined automatically to produce a wide range of shades. The inks are applied to the surface of the sweatshirts and absorbed by the fibers.

When to choose direct-to-garment printing?

Choose direct-to-garment printing if:

  • You need fewer sweatshirts
  • You want many different colours, shading or gradients

The setup process for a DTG printer is quick, so there is a lower start-up cost. A DTG printer can print up to 60 sweatshirts per day, and printing is more expensive if you need lots of sweatshirts. It is the most cost-effective method for printing small quantities or single items.

DTG can reproduce both fine details and small text, as well as bright, vivid colours. Almost anything you see on your computer screen can be printed, including intricate designs and photographs.
