The Different Printing Techniques for Your Personalised Tote Bags

Are you looking for tote bags to be personalised but you don’t know the difference between silkscreen printing and a direct-to-garment printing (also known as DTG) technique?

You have landed in the right place. Here we guide you through all the printing techniques possibilities and give you some indications on how to create the best tote bags for you and your business.

For tote bags, Camaloon offers its client two different printing techniques:

  • Silkscreen Printing
  • DTG (full colour)

Both options are quality options, but you might be more interested in one than in the other depending on your needs and budgets. Here below we will take you through a simple list of indications in order to make you take the right choice.

What is silkscreen printing?

Silkscreen printing is one of the oldest printing techniques, as well as one of the most used for promotional products. Its technique is used to reproduce your design image on any material. The picture is transferred by pressing the ink through a framed mesh. Per each colour, only one ink and one mesh are going to be used. The number of colours to use can vary but it is usually limited. Colours must be used one at a time.

Also known as serigraphy this technique resembles the stencil techniques. The ink is transferred onto the tote bag by pressing with a blade. First going in one direction and then on reserve. This is because the ink needs to wet the garment and then be pulled out of the mesh apertures.

When to use silk screen printing

Depending on the design, time and conditions it might be worth choosing silk screen printing or not. That’s why we have here listed some of the advantages and disadvantages. So, that you can quickly understand which option can serve you better.

Advantages of screen printing:

  • Long-lasting print with guaranteed high quality
  • Allows you to use Pantone colours
  • Can be used repeatedly without losing quality definition

Disadvantages of screen printing:

  • It is not cost-effective for small orders
  • Some products might have a minimum order for this reason
  • A limited number of colours (from 2 up to 6 per design)

What is direct-to-garment printing?

DTG is a digital printing process that uses four colours known as CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). The machine sprays on the tote bag the needed amount of each colour to create the desired result. The digital printer can be very precise compared to other analogical techniques. It is very similar to the inkjet printers that are used to print on paper.

When to use direct-to-garment printing?

Again, depending on the type of design, the time and the conditions, it might be worth choosing direct-to-garment printing or maybe not. Here as well, we have listed some of the advantages and disadvantages. These are the most important things to keep in mind in choosing one technique or the other.

Advantages of direct-to-garment printing:

  • Perfect solution for small and fast orders
  • The right technique if your personalisation includes printing numbers, and names
  • Detailed results
  • No colour limits (good for multi-coloured images such as photos and paint-like pictures)

Disadvantages of direct-to-garment printing:

  • Does not reproduce Pantone colours perfectly
  • To preserve the product, it’s better to wash in cold water
  • The digital print does not apply to every type of material
