Sublimation is the process in which a substance moves from the solid phase directly to the gaseous phase. In this process, the liquid phase is thus skipped. This is done by using heat, at least 160º celsius! With the proper heat press, if this gas encounters a coating polymer, it will penetrate that coating polymer and paint it permanently.
One of the main advantages of sublimation printing is that you can print any color combination and even photographs. As we mentioned before, the print is created through heat, making the ink basically part of the article, this causes the print to be extremely resistant. Lastly, sublimation printing can be used on any solid material and polyester, so the options are almost infinite!
There are relatively few disavantages of sublimation printing, nonetheless, it is important to know them. Sublimation printing is generally more expensive than screen printing or DTG. Moreover, sublimation printing requires a white or light-colored printing area.
